The Delaney sister speak their mind in a book that is both historical record and moving portrait depicting the rigid segregation of the Jim Crow South to two World Wars, the Civil Rights Movement, and the cultural transformations that followed. Bessie breaks barriers of the 1920s to become the second black woman to be a licensed practicing dentist in New York, Sadie earned a Master's of Education from Columbia in 1925 to become a New York City high school teacher.
